What to wear to a luau

Luaus are relaxed, but not beachwear-relaxed. Think resort casual, with a nod to the wind that picks up after dark.

The dress code

Most luaus ask for resort casual: an aloha shirt with shorts or light trousers, or a sundress. Swimwear and wet beach clothes are out. You will see plenty of new aloha shirts and flower crowns, and nobody minds; wearing island prints is part of the fun.

Shoes and layers

Luaus are held on lawns that can be damp at dusk, so sandals or flat shoes beat heels. The trade winds pick up once the sun has gone, and reviewers at the Hyatt and Black Rock recommend a light jacket or wrap. In winter, pack a compact rain layer: luaus usually go ahead in light rain.

What to bring
